In the Field: Nurse Kayla warns everybody to be cautious about believing everything we saw on social media.

A medical/surgical and rehabilitation nurse from Indiana advises the public to be wary of social media news. Especially for those who are unfamiliar with covid-19.

Q: TRUE or FALSE: “Nurses eat their young.”

A: I would love to say that I’ve never seen this happen and that every nurse is grateful to help out their young. But unfortunately it does happen, and I hate it. All of us have started as a new nurse at some point and have had to learn from someone.

Learning from a nurse who will only take advantage of you, not teach you, or will completely disregard any questions or concerns you have will not make for a great nurse for the future. It will just make “burnout” happen even quicker.

Q: What is your specialty and where are you based?

A: My specialty is med/surg and rehabilitation and I am based out of Indiana.

Q:  What would you say is the single biggest challenge nurses face today?

In today's world of nursing, I think the biggest thing we are faced with is the media. Between the false news about COVID numbers and what our hospital numbers actually are.

It’s frustrating to us to see the lies, it’s frustrating because people won’t stop talking about it, and it’s frustrating because we are all tired of being tired and not really having the support we need.
