In The Field: Nurse Chandra shares how her labor and delivery nurse influence her to choose her specialty

Maryland, Labor and Delivery/Postpartum nurse Chandra Dodson RN. shared who influenced her to choose her specialty.

Q: TRUE or FALSE: “Nurses eat their young.”

A: FALSE! Nurses should nurture their young. I remember an experience being a new nurse explaining an evidence based practice to 2 seasoned nurses. They laughed in my face and totally ignored my suggestion. At that moment I decided I never wanted another new nurse to experience that. I welcome new nurses and always offer them compassion.

Q: What is your specialty and where are you based?

A: Labor and Delivery/Postpartum at Maryland

Q: What does cultural competence mean for healthcare providers?

A: It means learning about different cultures and accepting a variety of cultural practices as we provide care for diverse populations.

Q: What is your experience with nurse unions?

A: I don’t have a vast amount of experience with them.

Q: How did you choose your specialty? What drew you to it?

A: I chose my specialty because when I had my first baby my nurse was AMAZING! She was so patient and decreased my fears about becoming a new mom. I knew this was the perfect specialty for me.
